More About CBT
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy was founded in the early 1960s by Aaron Beck, an American neurologist and psychiatrist, and advocates that it is the way we interpret an event that provokes our feelings and not the situation itself. (photo of Aaron Beck can stay) In other words, it is our cognition (thoughts) that generates our feelings and ultimately our behaviors and hence the name of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
When the same type of thinking invariably occurs in a rigid and/or extreme way, this can cause problems. In CBT, the psychologist's main objective is to identify patterns of behavior, thinking, beliefs and habits that are at the origin of these problems. The cognitive therapist will work collaboratively with the patient, that is, working hand in hand, to identify dysfunctional patterns of thoughts and beliefs and together find new, healthier possibilities for functioning. Another characteristic of CBT is that it is a structured approach where, at the beginning of treatment, patient and therapist define goals for therapy and the therapist defines a treatment plan with techniques and interventions for each phase of the process, namely initial, intermediate and final. The goal is for the patient to become their own therapist at the end of therapy.
Did not understand? Do not worry. Talk to me and I'll explain and help you change and overcome whatever is going wrong with you at the moment.
